Set up a data-driven goal
Drop in the spreadsheet you already get every week, then describe a target in plain English. You get a success metric that tracks itself from the numbers — and updates every time a new file lands.

A data-driven goal is an ordinary goal with a metric target attached — a target that reads its current value from a dataset instead of from someone typing a number in. You need two things: a dataset (from a spreadsheet you upload) and a goal to hang the target on. This takes about five minutes the first time and about thirty seconds every week after.
1. Upload the spreadsheet
- Go to Organization → Data. (This tab is for managers and admins; individual contributors don't see it.)
- Drop your file onto the upload zone, or click it to choose one. CSV,
.xlsxand.xlsall work, one file at a time. There's no template — use the file the way it already comes out of your phone system, CRM or ticketing tool. - Wait for the import to finish. miviva's intelligent importer reads the file, works out which columns are metrics, which column names the person, and which is the period, then matches names to people in your organization. The deterministic steps tick through instantly; the reading step usually takes 15–60 seconds.
- Read the result card. The first time you'll see New dataset registered, with the fields it found and how many values were loaded. Every upload also appears in Upload history underneath, where it can be undone.
2. Add a target to a goal
- Open the goal — your own, or a direct report's — or create one from Goals → Add Goal.
- In the Success Metrics card, click Add.
- On the From your data tab, describe the target in plain English, e.g. “Each rep should make at least 40 calls a week”, then click Propose targets.
- The proposal shows the dataset and field it picked, the rule it wrote, and the current value computed from your data right now. If it reads right, click Add. If not, rephrase and propose again — nothing is saved until you add it.
The target now lives on the goal with a badge — On target or Off target — the current value against the target, and when you expand it, a trend chart and who is below target. It isn't a snapshot: it's recomputed from the dataset every time the goal page loads.
3. Next week, drop the new file
Upload the following week's file to the same place. Miviva fingerprints recurring feeds, so even if the headers changed (Rep became Sales Rep, revenue is now $8,450 instead of 8450, the file is Excel instead of CSV) the result card says Recognized and the values go into the same dataset. Every target on that dataset updates on ingest. That's the whole weekly ritual.
Why does my target say “Waiting for data”?
A metric target is evaluated over the goal's timeline. If the goal starts October 1 and the only data you've uploaded is for July, there's nothing in the window yet. Either move the goal's start date back (Details → Timeline on the goal page) or wait for the first file that covers the goal's dates.
Wrong file? Undo it
Every upload is on the record under Upload history on the Data page. Undoing one removes exactly the values that upload wrote — nothing else — and targets update immediately.
